Located in Southwest Florida, Lee County is bordered by the Gulf of Mexico and Charlotte Harbor on the west, Charlotte County to the North, Collier County to the South, and Hendry County to the East. It is home to the cities of Bonita Springs, Cape Coral, Fort Myers, Fort Myers Beach, Lehigh, and Sanibel. One of the fastest growing counties in the nation, 500,000 residents call Lee County home, a number that doubles during the tourist season.

Lee County is renown for the beaches of Sanibel, Captiva, Boca Grande, and Fort Myers Beach.  Nicknamed the Island Coast, its barrier islands border 804 square miles of land, Including 237 miles of inland and coastal waterways. The white sand beaches and opportunities for shelling make them popular tourist destinations. With an average annual temperature of 74.4 degrees (63.8 in January and 83.1 in August), its temperate climate has played a major part in the area's growth.

Florida's tenth university, Florida Gulf Coast University, opened its door in April of 2002, and has an enrollment of more than 3,000 students. In addition to FGCU, Lee Countians are fortunate to be able to pursue educational opportunities from a total of eight universities and colleges offering classes in the area.

Lee County is home to many festivals, including the Edison Festival of Light in February. Other attractions include the J. N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel, Sanibel Shell Factory, Inc., in North Fort Myers, and the Koreshan Unity Settlement Historic District in Estero. Fort Myers' pleasant climate and natural beauty have attracted residents around the country, including such notables as Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and Harvey Firestone, all of whom had winter homes in Fort Myers.
